Environmental and Water Protection Technologies of Coastal Zones in Vietnam – EWATEC-COAST

During the Fellowship Grant of the Graduate School of Geosciences I wrote a peer reviewed paper draft with the title: “High resolution precipitation climatology for Vietnam. Part 1: Methodology and recent climate”. The research is embedded in the project “EWATEC-COAST”, where its overall goal lies in developing and implementation of management tools and environmental technologies for the strongly polluted Thi Vai river estuary in southern Vietnam. This paper is the first of my PhD Thesis, whose focus is the development of a methodology to construct high resolution precipitation climatologies for Vietnam, based on regional climate modeling and weather typing approach. During the funding period, I was working on a methodology to construct a highly resolved precipitation climatology for the recent climate in Vietnam. I used the k-means clustering for the weather typing and the COSMO-CLM for regional modeling purposes. The derived high-resolution precipitation climatology for tropical Southeast Asia is generally able to capture the present day precipitation and gives a clear added value in downscaling precipitation compared compared to previous studies (Nguyen et al. 2014 and Katzfey et al., 2016). The results of this analysis made one of the core features of the PhD thesis as this method will be applied to future climate projections for a follow up paper. The GSGS gave me the great opportunity to allow me to work on the peer reviewed paper on this topic and I am thankful for this opportunity.
