The IAPSO IAMAS IAGA Joint Assembly 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa, endorsed by the University of Cape Town and the South African Department of Science and Technology, provided a scientific frame for various Earth related research disciplines.
I presented parts of my PhD project in form of a poster in the session “A37 - Electromagnetic contributions to hydrological, environmental, archaeological and other near surface studies (DIV VI)” within in IAGA. During the poster presentation, I was able to get in touch with researchers from within my own research field (electric and electromagnetic methods in geophysics) and from entirely different scientific areas, all contacts yielding fruitful discussions.
On my poster, I presented results from constrained inversions of 2D time-domain electromagnetic data from three different sediment deposits in the East-African Rift Valley discussing the possible detection of bedrock basements underneath the basins and depths of investigation.
I was happy to attend presentations from various famous scientists like climatologist Prof. Mojib Latif from GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany, or geophysicist Prof. Kathy Whaler from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and get insights into their recent research activities.
Additionally, the venue of Cape Town offered some outstanding places of interest due to its eventful history and its natural setting between the Atlantic and the Indian ocean.
