Membership
For doctoral candidates, the normal way to register as a GSGS member is through and application for admission as a doctoral student with Doctoral Office of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Check out our Onboarding Checklist, available in our downloads section, for all steps to be taken at the start of your GSGS membership.
The following groups are members without having to apply separately
- registered doctoral candidates;
- professors and further advisors who are entitled to officially supervise a doctoral candidate in one of the Geosciences and who are members of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF);
- permanent MNF academic staff members who are a doctoral candidate’s mentor (i.e. part of a GSGS member's Thesis Advisory Committee).
Further members can be admitted by application (click to open form), especially people who
a) intend to pursue a doctorate in one of the Geosciences at Cologne. They must supply a support statement by a member according to No. 2 (above) in written or electronic form;
b) academic staff members without a permanent contract who are or intend to become a doctoral candidate’s mentor (i.e. part of a GSGS member's Thesis Advisory Committee);
c) professors and further advisors who are entitled to officially supervise a doctoral candidate in one of the Geosciences who are not members of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF);
d) other people with a doctorate or PhD degree relevant to the Geosciences;
e) visiting doctoral candidates who will spend at least 6 months at Cologne. Please mention the start and end dates of your (planned) stay at Cologne in your motivation statement.
Please use this secure application form to apply. The GSGS Steering Committee decides on the admission.
