The yearly fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union is a huge conference, with about 24.000 participants this year. With such a conference it is important to prepare and decide beforehand which sessions to attend, but it also offers a variety of opportunities. Some sessions were about topics from my field, which gave the chance to hear the talks of people from whom I have read papers. There was also a lot of possibilities to visit other sessions dealing with a variety of meteorological topics, which broadens the horizon and gives an overview over the topics of current research. Due to the size of the conference, many meteorologists were present, providing the chance to meet many different people. The poster sessions were parallel to the oral sessions, adding to the choices one has to make of where to go. The poster hall was huge and provided a lot of space in front of the posters, so that people could take time to look at the posters without being in the way of others passing by. The poster sessions were well visited so that a lot of input could be gained by presenting a poster. The ice breaker in the exhibition hall on the first evening helped to meet people, created a relaxed atmosphere and encouraged visiting the exhibitor's booths. The venue of the conference was well chosen. The location in the center of San Francisco provided many opportunities to network over dinner in one of the many restaurants. Also, San Francisco is a very nice city offering many interesting places to visit.
