Climate Change: Science and Policy and Education's New Integrator
Prof John Sweeney | Geography Department | National University of Ireland | Maynooth
Abstract: Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has referred to climate change as “the greatest challenge facing a world beset by crises”. But unlike less ‘wicked’ problems, it is not a case of simply science informing policy. The brief required is much more comprehensive, encompassing a wide range of other related aspects beyond the confines of science alone. This talk will examine the current state of the science post the 5th Assessment Report of the IPCC, the as yet ineffective policy response occurring, and the principles which should underpin the multidisciplinary assault necessary on the ‘silos’ preventing progress in tackling the problem.
